ICMPD Around the Globe: Silk Routes Partnership - Memorandum with Afghan Minister of Refugees and Repatriation signed

12 July 2017

In the framework of the Silk Routes Partnership for Migration the Minister of Refugees and Repatriation of the Government of Afghanistan, Sayed Hussain Alimi Balkhi, and ICMPD´s Director General, Michael Spindelegger signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Istanbul.

This Memorandum signed comprises three fields of action. First of all it aims to support the development of a Comprehensive Migration Policy for Afghanistan. Measures around this key point have already been taken in 2016 and included, among others, expert support, national stakeholder consultations and workshops.

Establishing a Migrant Resource Centre in Kabul

The second field of action is the establishment of the Migrant Resource Centre in Kabul under the auspices of the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation of the Government of Afghanistan. This centre will inform potential and outgoing migrants and the public in general on safe and orderly migration as well as the dangers and consequences of irregular migration. The third area of cooperation foresees the establishment of sustainable training structures within the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation, supported by ICMPD. By this, the ministry shall be enabled to train all government departments dealing with migration issues in the future.
