Project News: EMM4 coordinates Migration Media Award for journalists
Journalists and media managers in countries on both sides of the Mediterranean face many different challenges when it comes to reporting on migration. In order to address these challenges EMM4 teamed up with partners who announced the Migration Media Award.
The ICMPD-led and DG NEAR funded programme EUROMED Migration IV (EMM4) has teamed up with the DG NEAR funded Open Media Hub, the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Malta. Together they are developing an award scheme which will recognize and reward excellence in journalism on migration related topics in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
On 25 January, Dr.George W. Vella, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Malta officially announced the EU funded Migration Media Award during the high-level event “Towards a balanced narrative on migration in the Mediterranean’, held under the auspices of Malta’s EU presidency, in Brussels. It brought together representatives from governments, international organisations and renowned journalists during a panel debate. The event was opened with a high-level panel debate with the participation of Dr.George W.Vella, EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn, ICMPD DG Michael Spindelegger and the two journalists, Magda Abu-Fadil from Lebanon as well as Jean-Paul Marthoz, Professor of International Journalism at the Université Catholique de Louvain.
The overall objective of EMM4 is to foster cooperation on migration issues between EU Member States and the South Partner Countries of the European Neighbourhood; one of its components is to contribute to a more balanced narrative on migration, via media engagement and other strategically planned communication activities. The Migration Media Award competition is a first concrete activity and contribution to achieving this objective. The award scheme will be held on annual basis within the next three years and a first award ceremony rewarding up to 36 individual journalists is planned to take place in June 2017 in Malta.
All details regarding partners, eligibility, evaluation criteria and more will be published by the end of February 2017 on the dedicated website.More information on EUROMED Migration IV (EMM4) here.
