Project News: Migration Media Award Ceremony to be held in June

2 February 2017

The first Migration Media Award was launched in January 2017 as a new initiative coordinated by the Euromed Migration IV Programme. It recognizes the media as a key stakeholder in informing the public about migration and will reward excellence in journalism on migration topics. A panel of judges composed of eight high-level journalists is currently evaluating over 120 applications from more than 15 countries. All winners will be announced by 26 May and 12 first prize winners will be invited to the Award Ceremony on 14 June in Malta.

The ICMPD-led and DG NEAR funded programme EUROMED Migration IV (EMM4) teamed up with the DG NEAR funded Open Media Hub, the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Malta. Together, they have developed an award scheme which will recognize and reward excellence in journalism on migration related topics in the Euro-Mediterranean region. On 25 January, Dr.George W. Vella, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Malta had officially announced the EU funded Migration Media Award during the high-level event “Towards a balanced narrative on migration in the Mediterranean’.

The overall objective of EMM4 is to foster cooperation on migration issues between EU Member States and the South Partner Countries of the European Neighbourhood; one of its components is to contribute to a more balanced narrative on migration, via media engagement and other strategically planned communication activities. The Migration Media Award competition is a first concrete activity and contribution to achieving this objective. The award scheme will be held on annual basis within the next three years and a first award ceremony rewarding up to 36 individual journalists is planned to take place in June 2017 in Malta.
