Project News: Migration Media Award - now open for submissions
Journalists and media managers in countries on both sides of the Mediterranean face many different challenges when it comes to reporting on migration. In order to support these journalists an ICMPD-coordinated initiative developed an award scheme to honour and support those working on migration issues in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Deadline for applications is 9 April 2017.
The ICMPD-led and DG NEAR funded programme EUROMED Migration IV (EMM4) teamed up with the DG NEAR funded Open Media Hub, the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Malta. Together, they have developed an award scheme which will recognize and reward excellence in journalism on migration related topics in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
On 25 January, Dr.George W. Vella, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Malta had officially announced the EU funded Migration Media Award during the high-level event “Towards a balanced narrative on migration in the Mediterranean’. The criteria for eligibility, evaluation and the overall application process have now been finalised and interested journalists can start to submit their applications. The deadline for submissions is 9 April 2017.
The overall objective of EMM4 is to foster cooperation on migration issues between EU Member States and the South Partner Countries of the European Neighbourhood; one of its components is to contribute to a more balanced narrative on migration, via media engagement and other strategically planned communication activities. The Migration Media Award competition is a first concrete activity and contribution to achieving this objective. The award scheme will be held on annual basis within the next three years and a first award ceremony rewarding up to 36 individual journalists is planned to take place in June 2017 in Malta.
All details regarding partners, eligibility, evaluation criteria and more will be published by the end of February 2017 on the dedicated website.More information on EUROMED Migration IV (EMM4) here.
