Regional office in Central Asia opened for new border management projectRSS - Press Release
BISHKEK, 25 November 2015-To increase the effectiveness and efficiency of border management in five Central Asian countries, ICMPD is engaging in a new phase of the programme BOMCA.
Since its launch 2003, BOMCA (Border Management Programme in Central Asia) has implemented phases targeting capacity building and institutional reforms, developing trade corridors, improving border management systems and eliminating drug trafficking across the Central Asia region.
Every new phase of BOMCA was designed to gradually continue the Actions implemented during the preceding phases of the Programme. With time the horizons of BOMCA have become broader and the actions of the Programme have expanded to not only target border guards, but also other authorities working in the area of customs, migration, drug control, agriculture, health etc. The Programme introduced the concept and principles of Integrated Border Management.
The project is now entering its 9th phase and BOMCA is pleased to announce the opening of its regional office. The new BOMCA office which was officially inaugurated in Bishkek on 25 November 2015.
The European Union allocated a sum of EUR 33.6 million to BOMCA for the period of 2003 – 2014 and almost EUR 5 million for the current implementation phase from 2015 to 2018.
The BOMCA team will work to advance the concept of Integrated Border Management in Central Asia, with the view to improve cooperation and communication channels among border agencies.
