Vienna Migration Conference 2021

19 October 2021 - 20 October 2021

Austria

How should we re-think cooperation along the routes to Europe to deliver better migration outcomes – now and during the post-pandemic recovery? This is the focus of ICMPD’s Vienna Migration Conference (VMC) 2021, "Re-imagining migration partnerships: Challenges, opportunities and strategies," which will take place on 19-20 October 2021.

The Vienna Migration Conference, now in its sixth year, is ICMPD’s annual flagship event and a premier platform for discussion on migration in Europe and beyond. This year’s conference will examine ways to build and strengthen migration partnerships in Europe’s neighbourhood and the wider world. In so doing, the VMC 2021 will place a special emphasis on ‘game changers’ that could alter the negotiating landscape, whether these are event driven, based on long-term ‘megatrends’ or sparked by innovations like digitalisation. It will cover a range of topics, including joint responses to displacement from Afghanistan; creating functioning and sustainable African-European migration partnerships; putting partnerships into action; crisis management at the external European Union border; and the future of the European Union amidst a turbulent geopolitical scene.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Vienna Migration Conference 2021 will take on a hybrid format, gathering a small circle of key stakeholders in Vienna, from where the main sessions will be livestreamed via a dedicated virtual conference space.
