MIgration EU eXpertise (MIEUX) is a joint EU-ICMPD initiative strengthening the migration governance capacities of governments in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America by mobilising experts from EU member states and other countries. Launched in 2009, MIEUX entered its third phase: MIEUX III (2016–2019).

MIEUX is a fast, flexible, and demand-driven initiative. It provides short-term technical assistance on legal migration, asylum, irregular migration, and migration and development. MIEUX supports partner countries’ migration-related administrations and regional organisations, as well as new actors, such as local administrations, parliamentary bodies, the judiciary, etc.

As a pioneering initiative, MIEUX continues to deliver significant results both in terms of the scope of interventions and their outcomes. As such, MIEUX pursues its objective to build bridges between the EU and partner countries, equip partners with tailor-made practices, enhance migration understanding and narratives, bring together various stakeholders in view of setting national and regional migration goals, as well as open up new co-operation opportunities.

Over seven years, MIEUX has received more than hundred requests for assistance involving around hundred countries and five regional organisations around the world.

Since 2009, 262 experts have been recruited for MIEUX activities, 171 representing 22 EU member states, 91 representing the non-governmental and academia sectors, and EU agencies (e.g. FRONTEX and EUROPOL), including 33 experts from the South (14 from governmental sectors).
