United Nations High Level Meeting on Refugees and Migrants

20 September 2016

On September 19th an ICMPD delegation led by DG Michael Spindelegger took part in the UN high-level summit to address large movements of refugees and migrants.

Director General Michael Spindelegger addressed the UN General Assembly emphasizing the importance of inter-state cooperation and migrant protection. He also pointed out that migration must not only be seen as a global challenge but as a global opportunity in a world that is "increasingly interlinked and depends on constant exchanges of talent, skills, information and know-how." Thus, he very much welcomed the adoption of the "New York Declaration of Refugees and Migrants" by all 193 United Nations Member States as "a crucial step in the development of a new and global framework for the protection of refugees and for managing migration in a better and safer way."

Along with the Director General, Lukas Gehrke Director Southern Dimension took the opportunity to introduce the brand new EU funded ICMPD publication "Emerging Findings: A Comparative Study of Six Crisis Situations" conducted by ICMPD researchers and the International Migration Institute (University of Oxford) under the EU project that complements the MICIC initiative. The ICMPD delegation is taking part in different stakeholder meetings until September 21st.
