Summary

Since 2003, the group of Russians/Chechens has been one of the main groups of asylum seekers in Austria. In principle, the state of research regarding this group is very limited. This is reflected by the current situation on data: the number of Russian citizens in Austria is well-known, whereas the number of Chechens can only be estimated. In addition, Chechens in Austria are a very heterogeneous group that differs greatly in terms of educational level, time of arrival (or flight) to Austria, political attitude and religiosity.

The INTOP study aims to develop a solid knowledge base that allows for further discussion on policy development(s) with regard to the successful social, educational and labour market integration of (young) Chechens in Austria. More specifically, the study examines which individual and structural factors determine the life perspectives (“Lebenswelt“) of Chechens with regard to successful social, educational and professional integration. In doing so, the subjective perspective of the Chechens will be taken into account, thus deepening the understanding of the subjective environment and perspectives of Chechens, especially young Chechens.

The results of the study will contribute to improving existing approaches in integration work with and for members of the target group and to develop new tailored measures.
