Training centre and business park opened in Enugu (Nigeria)

Unique collaboration bringing together migration expertise, a local university and the private sector, opens up prospects for the local population, business location and companies

On 25 November 2022, a vocational training facility, the Centre of Practical Skills, as well as the Godfrey Okoye University European Business Park, were opened in Enugu, Nigeria. This unique combination of private entrepreneur involvement and skilled worker training will enable 100 people per year to undertake dual education and training to learn skilled trades and become plumbers, electricians and construction supervisors.

Vienna, 24 January 2022: Last year saw a rebound to pre-pandemic levels of irregular migration to Europe, with almost 200,000 illegal crossings recorded at EU borders, a 57% rise compared to 2020 and 38% rise compared to 2019. The ICMPD Migration Outlook report 2022 charts what drove these spikes and predicts how and why they will continue into 2022.

ICMPD Training Institute on Migration Capacity Partnership opened in Malta

Malta, 15 December 2021 - Today, the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) officially inaugurated the new premises of their Regional Office for the Mediterranean based in Malta, and launched the Training Institute on Migration Capacity Partnership for the Mediterranean (MCP Med TI). The opening took place with the distinguished presence of Hon. Evarist Bartolo, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of Malta, Hon. Byron Camilleri, Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement of Malta and Michael Spindelegger, Director General of ICMPD.

Greece joins the European migration organisation ICMPD

Vienna 18th October 2021—The number of ICMPD Member States has increased again: Greece has just become the 19th member to join ICMPD, an international organisation working to find innovative solutions to regional migration challenges. This accession takes place after Germany (2020), Türkiye and Malta (2018) joined ICMPD in recent years.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has not only caused a global health crisis of historic proportions but is also the event that impacted International migration in 2020 more than any other. It will continue to shape the migration year of 2021 according to the “ICMPD Migration Outlook 2021”, a landmark publication released by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).

AU and ICMPD deepen and extend cooperation on migration

The African Union Commission on Thursday, signed a MoU with the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) to enhance existing cooperation on Migration and mobility governance between the two organisations. The MoU was signed by H.E. Mrs Amira ElFadil, Commissioner for Social Affairs on behalf of the Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mohamet, while Director General, Mr. Michael Spindelegger, signed on behalf of ICMPD.

Afghanistan is second only to Syria in the number of refugees originating from within its borders in recent years. Officially, about 2.5 million refugees have left Afghanistan in the almost four decades of this country being marked by hostilities and terror. The unofficial figure for the number of people who have fled exceeds six million. The majority of them are currently in the neighbouring countries of Pakistan and Iran as well as in Türkiye. It is in this context that the first information centre for potential migrants was opened in Kabul, the Afghan capital, this week.

The number of member states of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) has increased by one as of May 2018. Türkiye has become the 17th state to join ICMPD, an international migration policy organisation founded 25 years ago with Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. ICMPD already enjoys long-lasting cooperation with Türkiye and runs several projects and activities from its office in Ankara. 

The number of member states of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) has increased by one as of May 2018.
