Summary

Objective: To strengthen the international protection status determination procedures of the Turkish Directorate General of Migration Management (DGMM) in relation to the institutional setup, quality of decisions, establishment of special procedures and collection and use of country of origin information with a view to enabling smooth processing of the existing backlog and responding to the new asylum claims.

The establishment of sustainable and effective asylum procedures in line with international refugee law is essential for properly addressing international protection needs in the largest host country in the world. Therefore, refugee status determination, especially drafting of status decisions, researching and compiling COI and supporting the structural changes through strengthening evidence base with a view to ensure informed policy and decision making constitute the main focus of the project. The project aims to support DGMM in these areas through 3 components. The project components focus on capacity building through workshops, conferences and study visits to facilitate peer to peer exchange of information between DGMM experts and their EU counterparts, strengthening the evidence base for policy making through research activities on and analysis of the practices, developments and experiences in Europe and in the region, and technical assistance and backstopping, respectively. The specific thematic areas covered by the project include refugee status determination system structures, country of origin information mechanisms, country of origin information research, special asylum procedures and legal procedures.
