Building on its innovative nature, ICMPD led the way on tackling key emerging challenges to sound migration governance such as the narrative on migration, urban-bound migration and migration and technology.

The ICMPD Regional Coordination Office for the Mediterranean opened in Valletta, Malta, in 2016. In 2017, it consolidated its role in the region. It worked very closely with the European Union, Southern Partner Countries, EU Institutions and Agencies, and particularly DG NEAR as well as a wide range of relevant stakeholders. The office oversees the regional and national operations and staff deployed in Amman, Tripoli, Tunis and Valletta.

Supporting migration governance is at the heart of a programme jointly elaborated by Libya and ICMPD, after a thorough consultation process with all concerned parties. This programme brings together an all-Libya range of stakeholders ranging from institutions to civil society. ICMPD is also supporting the Mobility Partnership between the EU and Jordan and, notably, the development and implementation of a national migration policy.
