Project News: Launching of the main phase of ‘MIMAK’

ICMPD, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Swiss Cooperation Office in Kosovo*, launched the main phase of the project ‘Strengthening Migration Management Authorities in Kosovo (MIMAK)’ on the 8th November 2017.

 

ICMPD in close cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Swiss Cooperation Office in Kosovo launched the main phase of the project ‘Strengthening Migration Management Authorities in Kosovo (MIMAK)’ on the 8th November 2017.

The event was chaired by the Minister of Internal Affairs who jointly with officials of different institutions and organizations addressed the audience. Minister Sefaj stated that the Kosovo Government is fully committed to further strengthen the inter-institutional approach to manage migration in Kosovo, aiming at preventing irregular migration and designing policies contributing to regular migration for education and employment purposes and to make migration part of Kosovo’s economic development plan. The Swiss Ambassador to Kosovo reaffirmed the support of Switzerland to the Kosovo government and its development agenda, while reiterating the fact that Kosovo authorities need to put efforts to fulfil remaining criteria for completing the process of visa liberalization with the European Union.

The Minister on this occasion also announced the nomination of the National Coordinator on Migration, who will steer migration management in Kosovo and will coordinate the implementation of the Strategy and the Action Plan on Migration.

Government as well as international partners, among others the Swiss Ambassador to Kosovo, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Diaspora, the senior advisor of the Prime Minister, the Head of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Kosovo, representatives of the EU Office in Kosovo, members of the Government Authority on Migration and the ICMPD Regional Coordinator for Western Balkans and Turkey participated in the event.

The event aimed also at presenting the Government Authority on Migration (GAM), an inter-institutional body comprised of 15 institutions working jointly on collecting and analyzing data on migration, as well as developing policies and recommendations. The chair and co-chair of the authority presented the Migration Profile 2016, which was developed with the support of ICMPD and the University of Maastricht.

The project ‘Strengthening Migration Management Authorities in Kosovo (MIMAK)’ aims at strengthening the work of the National Coordinator on Migration and of GAM with supporting restructuring migration management structures in Kosovo, facilitating improved data collection and analyses, training of GAM members and supporting government officials in their outreach to the public aiming at improved information on migration.

The project is financed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration through the Swiss Cooperation Office in Kosovo and is implemented in partnership with Maastricht University.
