Internships

Internships at ICMPD provide an opportunity for students and recent graduates to obtain hands-on experience working in an international setting, and across a broad range of thematic areas. 

As an international organisation, we believe that it is vital to invest directly in developing the skills and knowledge of future experts in the field of migration. 

To that end, we welcome applications from those pursuing (or having recently obtained) an undergraduate or post-graduate degree, or additionally from young professionals looking to switch careers. ICMPD has also worked with a number of academic institutions to provide Erasmus-based internships and work experience during the course of study.

Overview:

The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) assumes a pivotal role, offering crucial contributions to Türkiye in enhancing its capacity to manage migration effectively. ICMPD's multifaceted support encompasses comprehensive analysis of prevailing migration dynamics, provision of evidence-based insights, and addressing operational and capacity gaps to meet Türkiye's urgent requirements.

ICMPD implements a diverse portfolio of projects aimed at bolstering migration management efforts. These initiatives cover various critical areas, including the development of institutional frameworks, addressing issues of irregular migration, facilitating return dialogues, improving border management, preventing human trafficking, conducting migration analysis, facilitating legal migration pathways, managing labor migration, and addressing diaspora concerns.

Operating from its base in Istanbul, ICMPD WBTR RO serves as a central hub for coordinating activities throughout the region, leveraging additional support from its offices. As ICMPD remains agile and responsive to evolving project demands, it stands poised to expand its presence in Türkiye to effectively meet emerging needs.

The Regional Office is looking to recruit an Intern who will work with ICMPD to develop full-fledged research.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Support the RO team in the implementation of project activities in accordance with the work plan;
  • Support the RO team in preparing the ICMPD WBTR Monthly Bulletin
  • Support to editing and formatting of documents and assist with administrative duties including correspondence to internal and external partners, photocopies etc;
  • Support to preparation of summaries, graphs and presentations in support to various project activities;
  • Support to procurement processes according to ICMPD rules and procedures;
  • Assist in conducting comprehensive analysis of migration dynamics in Türkiye and the region.
  • Provide support in the development and implementation of institutional frameworks related to migration management
  • Support in the preparation of reports, policy briefs, and other relevant documentation
  • Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of ongoing projects and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with team members to identify emerging needs and opportunities for ICMPD's intervention in migration management.
  • Assist the project team with any other task as necessary.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • University degree
  • Fluency in Turkish and English
  • Basic understanding of project administration and implementation of projects
  • Currently enrolled in a postgraduate course or a recent graduate
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Computer proficiency in standard office software (word, excel, etc.)

Compensation:

ICMPD offers a monthly fee of EUR 300,00 and will provide accident insurance for the duration of the internship. However, travel expenses will not be reimbursed and Health insurance is the responsibility of the incumbent.

The internship does not constitute a commitment to future employment with ICMPD.

Overview:

The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) is an international organisation tasked with promoting innovative, comprehensive and sustainable migration policies. With 20 Member States and more than 460 staff members. Active in more than 90 countries worldwide, it takes a regional approach in its work to create efficient cooperation and partnerships along migration routes. Priority regions include Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Mediterranean, Silk Routes, Western Balkans and Türkiye. Its three-pillar approach to migration management – structurally linking research, migration dialogues and capacity building – contributes to better migration policy development worldwide.

The Intern will be mainly involved in the Supporting the Administration Unit and in coordination with Project teams to ensure office management and administrative tasks are fully accomplished.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in Office Management and General Administrative Tasks including meetings, workshops, trainings etc. under MDC management.
  • Ensure proper archiving of hard copy files in accordance with ICMPD rules and regulations.
  • Assist in compiling a vendor list for the preferred supplier list.
  • Support desk research to identify new vendors and compiling vendor list
  • Assist in asset management and retrieval of laptops from the Embassy.
  • Assist in editing and formatting documents and provide administrative support, including correspondence with internal and external partners, photocopying, etc.
  • Provide support to the ROSU team with any additional tasks as necessary.
  • Undertake any other related administrative tasks as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor degree for the related areas.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken Turkish and English;
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills with good attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Strong drafting and reporting skills;
  • Computer literacy (Outlook, Word, Excel, Internet research)

The Modernisation Hub is an innovative initiative by ICMPD MED region, designed to drive the integration of cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices within the realm of migration policy and management. Serving as a beacon of excellence and innovation, the hub focuses on leveraging the power of new technologies, artificial intelligence, and green digital priorities to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of migration programs. By fostering a collaborative environment, the hub aims to streamline knowledge management processes, facilitate smoother transitions to digital platforms, and encourage the sharing of best practices and lessons learned across the ICMPD's Mediterranean region. The Modernisation Hub embodies ICMPD's commitment to modernisation as a key driver for achieving more impactful and sustainable outcomes in international cooperation and migration policy development.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

In close coordination with the modernisation team, the intern will be involved in various tasks, such as:

  • Support in conducting comprehensive research on modernisation initiatives within the field of migration policy, focusing on the application of new technologies and methodologies.
  • Participate in the analysis of data related to modernisation efforts, employing statistical software and methodologies to uncover insights.
  • Assist in developing and organising content for reports, briefs, and presentations summarising research findings on modernisation trends and their impact on migration policy.
  • Support in organising and/or transcribing meetings.
  • Assist with any other task as necessary.

Skills Development:

  • Develop the ability to undertake small assignments independently.
  • Increase understanding of ICMPD projects in the Mediterranean region.
  • Increased understanding of migration-related research.
  • Network with ICMPD colleagues.

Incumbent Profile:

  • Recent graduate or ongoing university study/studies in international relations, law, development studies, economics, social or political science, human rights, migration studies or related field.
  • Fluent in English, French and Arabic.
  • Good understanding of research methodologies, data collection and related fields.
  • Advanced computer literacy in main Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong interest in modernisation, digital transformation, and their applications in the field of migration.
  • Strong communication, analytical, drafting and organization skills.

Compensation:

ICMPD offers a monthly fee of EUR 500,00, and will provide accident insurance for the duration of the internship. However, travel expenses will not be reimbursed and Health insurance is the responsibility of the incumbent.

Background:

The Budget and Planning Unit of the ICMPD is part of the ICMPD Corporate Finance and Budget Management Department and is responsible for the effective budget management and allocation of financial resources. The unit holds primary responsibility of providing guidance and technical support to the organisational units and budget owners on various aspects of budget formulation, execution, monitoring, and reporting.

This internship opportunity aims to provide a valuable learning experience for individuals interested in gaining practical knowledge and skills in budgeting and planning processes.

Objective:

The main objective of this internship is to support the Budget and Planning Unit in its day-to-day operations and contribute to the organization's budgeting and planning activities. The intern will work closely with the unit's staff, assisting in various tasks and projects.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

The intern will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Assisting in the preparation and analysis of financial data for budget and project proposals.
  • Conducting research and data collection related to budgeting and planning activities.
  • Compiling financial reports and documents as required.
  • Supporting the maintenance and updating of budgeting and planning tools and ERP (SAP).
  • Supporting the development of digital budget process.
  • Participating in budget monitoring and variance analysis.
  • Assisting in organisation of budget related meetings and workshops, drafting meeting minutes and reports.
  • Collaborating with other departments to gather relevant information for budgeting purposes.
  • Performing any other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Learning Outcomes:

Through this internship, the intern will have the opportunity to:

Reporting Lines:

The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Budget and Planning Manager. Regular feedback and guidance will be provided to ensure a valuable learning experience.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program related to finance, accounting, economics, or a relevant field.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and other relevant software applications.
  • Good organizational and time management abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and planning principles (preferred, but not mandatory).
  • Ability to follow instructions, showing initiative and being proactive.
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues from different cultural and professional background.
  • Background information/documentation to be provided by ICMPD.
  • Fluency in English.
